🟠 What work counts in declared disaster areas (orange)?
In areas declared for disasters like bushfires and floods, recovery-related work counts as specified work — and it's the only case where volunteer work counts too, not just paid work. Examples listed by Home Affairs: cleaning and clearing debris, demolition, land clearing and heavy machinery work, residential and non-residential construction and repairs (including roads, bridges, fences and drainage), support for charities, admin and call centres, delivering supplies, and caring for animals. General service jobs like cafés and hotels don't count. When you apply, select 'flood recovery – paid/volunteer' as your Employment type in ImmiAccount.
🏗️ What counts as construction
Under the Home Affairs definition, both residential and non-residential building count (no difference). It also covers heavy/civil engineering (roads and civil works), site preparation, and building installation and finishing work. Examples: landscaping and painting new buildings, fencing, scaffolding, construction support and cleaning services.
