Water Pump Basics
Pump
Types

Water pumps are usually sized by their hose diameter in inches. They go up from 2-inch to 4-inch to 6-inch, and the bigger the number, the more water they can move. A small 2-inch pump is plenty for emptying a single pit, while sites that need large-scale dewatering hire 4-inch or 6-inch trailer pumps. With trailer pumps, the hoses for the inlet and outlet get just as thick.
